History
The Makran region surrounding Gwadar was occupied by unknown Bronze Age people who settled in the few oases. it later became a part of the Persian Empire. History records that this area was said to be possessed by a long list of rulers until the year 325 BC including the great Iranian king Kaus, and the mighty Afrasaib of TURAN.
Alexander the great incidentally found the sea in this area on his way from India to Macedonia and then for 22 years It was under the region that came under the local rule in about 303 BC.
In the last quarter of the eighteenth century, Gwadar and its surrounding regions fell into the hand of Muscat, but after the partition of the subcontinent, Gwadar and its surrounding regions reverted back from Muscat to Pakistan.

Future
The government declared Gwadar port a “Special Economic Zone” in the budget, 2003- 2004. All banks will open their branches. five-star hotels will be built, offshore banking will be started, factories, warehouses, and storage will be set up, and the tourism industry will be promoted in the area.
Oman has offered $100 million in aid for the development of social and infrastructure facilities in Balochistan.
Several electric power generation projects are also being carried out in Gwadar and its surroundings.
A sum of 2.3 million dollars is being utilized from the Omani grant. The Pakistan government and the Civil Aviation Authority are also contributing an additional Rs 563.35 million to upgrade the Gwadar airport.
Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) an organization of rice exporters in the country has decided to establish a rice zone in Gwadar.
The 1400km-long Trans-Afghan Gas Pipeline (TAP) from Turkmenistan to Gwadar costing 3 billion, is being laid out.
Gwadar Port’s phase one worth $398 million has been completed with Chinese assistance. Construction of the second phase of Gwadar port started at the cost of $865 million in May 2005 and would be completed by the year 2010.
